What's the difference between raster and vector art? Raster art is composed of pixels, while vector art is mathematically based. When using raster art, the images become pixelated, grainy, or blurry if enlarged. However, vector graphics may be infinitely scaled (larger or smaller) without compromising quality.
Vector is the format of choice in many areas, and it is a necessity in the more specialized fields...particularly when objects need to be scalable. Common uses for vector graphics include: logo design, signage, print work, stationery, and CNC machining, as well as use in conjunction with embroidery digitizing software, die cutting machines, and CAD / 3D programs. In addition, vectors are preferred by many schools and teachers, because they can be enlarged and printed out for bulletin board ideas and banner designs.
What programs are used to open, edit, or draw vector art? Here are a few: InkScape (free), Aviary, Adobe Illustrator, SVG Editor, CorelDraw, Alchemy (free), Xara, Skencil, OpenOffice.org Draw, and many others. Web search "vector image editing software."
